About Me
Welcome to GunterSounds.net! I’m Neil Gunter, an audio enthusiast and technologist with over 30 years of experience in recording and production. My journey in the world of audio began in my early teen years with the Fostex X-15 and Tascam Porta 02 cassette four-track recorders. This experience sparked a deep passion for both analog and digital recording techniques, and I still have my original Tascam Porta 02 model today.
Audio Hobbyist, Technologist and Lover of Liberty
Throughout my career, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a variety of instruments and technologies. From recording acoustic drums, bass guitar, and electric guitars using both tube and solid-state amplifiers, to experimenting with a range of effects like delay, distortion, overdrive, and fuzz, I’ve explored many facets of audio production. These instruments have played a significant role in my recordings, where I’ve utilized trusted microphones from Shure, Carvin, and Audio-Technica, including both dynamic and condenser types.
Equipment and Technology
My experience with tube technologies includes the ART Studio V3 Tube MP series and Behringer Ultragain preamplifiers. During a time when this technology was relatively new, I mastered the use of PCI sound cards linked with word clock cables, managing up to 24 inputs and outputs to an outboard mixer. I have worked with a variety of DAW software, including Cakewalk Sonar, Pro Tools, Logic, and currently, REAPER on Rocky Linux 9.
Current Setup:
My mixing techniques often emulate the classic sounds of the 70s, using tube and tape emulation to achieve a warm, vintage feel.
Musical Styles and Innovation
I primarily record rock music influenced by the 70s and early 80s rock ‘n’ roll, along with elements of 70s and 80s punk and glam. My diverse portfolio also includes recording 1950s style rock, R&B, and early rap music in the style of Herbie Hancock and RUN-DMC.
I love experimenting with sound. Routing guitars through custom-made pedals and using Vox Tonelab series for amp emulation are just a few of the ways I innovate. Virtual environments and Impulsive Response files help me create authentic guitar cabinet and room emulations, while REAPER allows me to manipulate drum tracks to sound as if they were recorded in different studios.
Podcast Production
I’m the producer and host of the guntersounds.NET podcast, where I explore audio recording and production for amateurs and enthusiasts. The podcast also examines the history of audio production from the earliest recordings in 1890. The goal of this podcast is to provide an oral history of audio recording and to exchange ideas with other audio enthusiasts on recording techniques. By sharing these insights, I aim to help listeners save money and achieve professional results on an amateur budget.
Additionally, I host the Arizona Liberty podcast, focusing on security, privacy, cryptographic systems, precious metals, and independent entrepreneur networks.
I’m also in the process of creating the Arizona Liberty Business podcast, which will interview small business owners within the state.
Field Recording and Services
For the past four years, I’ve provided audio field services for conferences, forums, and rallies, using equipment such as:
To the Future..!
All of my audio work has been 100% volunteer, but I’m now transitioning into a small business to provide professional audio services. Combining my audio expertise with my skills as a system administrator and computer encryption specialist, I aim to offer comprehensive solutions tailored to my clients' needs.
Thank you for visiting guntersounds.NET. I look forward to sharing my passion for audio with you and helping bring your projects to life.
